Praying "Grandfathers"

“GRANDPA”

1970-JOURNAL ENTRIES~6-27~Met 20 year old Mark Smith tonight. In Ft Wayne for the summer selling books. (found our name in the yellow pages.) A senior at Ozark Bible College, he’s interested in our youth ministry. 8/13-The leaders voted unanimously for Mark.

9-21- Prayer at 6:00 a.m. Mark’s first day at work- (He thought I meant 6:00 p.m. –he’s evidently not a morning person, at least not yet). He is open to God’s will. Susan, Mark’s wife, is pregnant!

5-11-1972-Mark and I spent the day at Lake James, praying, thinking and planning. …so vital to get away from the trying pace of people and their problems. We returned home, relaxed and thankful.

2008-April 3-REFLECTION~Forty years later, Mark, now 60 transitions from senior pastor of Fellowship Bible Church he and Susan started 23 years ago. Mark looks back on our time together as in depth discipling. He invited me to San Antonio, TX last week end to a memorable celebration. FBC released him to be full time director of IMPACT, the ministry he began in 1986. That year Mark led a few men to Ecuador where they built a fresh water system for Rachel Saint (her story was in the recent movie, End of the Spear). IMPACT has completed 14 similar projects bringing fresh drinking water to villages on three continents.

Last Friday, Mark introduced me to one he has discipled, Gerald, from Uganda, Africa. Gerald’s story parallels Samuel Morse who prayed to save Taylor University in the late 1800’s. On the streets of Uganda, eating out of garbage pails at age 14, Gerald now counsels members of the president’s cabinet. Suddenly I saw this new brother as a second generation disciple of the work God led with young Mark Smith in 1970. As I embraced Gerald and prayed a blessing over him, he wept, affectionately calling me “Grandpa, a spiritual grandfather he never had known.

The things which you have heard from me….entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” II Timothy 2:2
